Cardiff District Tech Time Meeting, Monday, March 28th:)

The Tech Time meeting was an interesting one, thanks to Jeff, Keith, and Kim for updates on the CUE and new ideas!

1.  https://www.dropbox.com/
This is a website that you can download and transfer files up to 100 gb (2 gb for the free account), similar to Google Docs.  Kim tried it with a rather large avi file and it worked!

2.  http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/
This is not a new site, but the idea is to gather text from a famous speech and paste it into http://www.wordle.net/ and look at the words that are used most frequently.  These will be the largest words, very powerful in a classroom using speeches such as "I Had a Dream" by Dr. Martin Luther King.

3.  http://www.seamonkey-project.org/
A new browser, used for easier editing of documents.  Ask Jeff, if you have questions:)

4. http://www.tammyworcester.com/Tips/Tammys_Technology_Tips_for_Teachers.html
A website by Tammy Worcester, with great tips for teachers using technology that was shared by Jeff, from the CUE.
Also, her blog page, http://favoritefreetools.blogspot.com/ Tammy's Favorite FREE Web Tools

5.  Our next meeting will be:  April 25th @ Ada Harris School at 3:15 pm....see you there (or be square:)

CUE

Attended a session on United Streaming this AM. Have a few tips that may be helpful. Session ended a bit anticlimactically as the presented fainted at the podium.

Perhaps the first tip is from CUE is....don't faint in class unless you want it to be a REALLY memorable day..perhaps for the wrong reason.

Now sitting in a session called Tammy's tips for teachers. Will see what I can learn.

Tech Time Meeting Notes~February 28, 2011

Our meeting was chalk-full of resources for teachers:
  1. Teacher Resources on the Cardiff District Website has a "Staff Only" link that is only visible when you sign in.   There are lots of resources for staff.
  2. MAC class is doing a graphic novels project and found:  www.toondoo.com, to create their own cartoons.  You can pick from five pages and lots of different creatures, backgrounds, etc..  Afterwards students can save their cartoons under their name, as private and under the account the MAC class has created.  You can share the link with parents for them to view.  The teachers used the book "Lunch Lady" to teach the class prior about lay-out, narrative boxes, and backgrounds.   You can save your cartoon as PDF, then change it to a JPEG.  It can then be used in iphoto, to make into a book or card.
  3. http://wonderopolis.org is a cool website that has a "Question of the Day" for students to explore.  There is a short video and lots of info.
  4. www.spellingcity.com is a website for teachers to create a spelling list for the students.  The students then log-in and can play games and take a spelling test.  There are games such as  HangMouse, that is similar to Hang Man, on the "Free Activities".  Teacher's lists can be accessed through the search button, even if the student does not know the teacher's log-in.  There is a crossword-making tool for students to type in their spelling words and play the crossword puzzle.
  5. Any file can previewed by clicking on the file once and then pressing space bar.
  6. The next Tech Time will be March 28th, 3:15 pm at Cardiff School...be there!!!
